Best Case Scenarios that Provide a Case-Load of Fun: Educating with Enhanced Case Studies!

Project Description

I would like to develop a set of student resources which assist students in developing a more thorough understanding of the intricate and complex details of various diseases and disorders. It is well known that case studies assist with learning pathophysiology, and illustrate the connections between various organ system functions. At the same time, case studies can generate interest and long-term memories as well as foster writing and communication skills. Most case studies are a text-only format. This project is aimed at providing more depth to this assignment type by adding more dimensions, specifically by incorporating visual and hands-on aspects.

Research Question

1. Does developing and implementing visual and hands-on case studies help students better master course content?

2. Do students develop longer-term memories of each subject?

3. Are students better equipped to visualize not only specific aspects of each disease, but also how deterioration of one organ system can affect other organ systems?

4. Will students find the additional resources helpful, interesting, and assist with preparing students for real-life scenarios?

Impact on teaching and learning at UBC

This project is both sustainable and scalable. All materials are non-disposable and can easily be ramped up for over 200 students. It is hypothesized that the project’s outcomes and ideas will be of benefit to UBC students, UBC faculty, as well as the international community. It is anticipated that the students will benefit academically.
