2021 calendar of events

Guest speaker: Brett McCollum (November 25)

In this session, Dr. McCollum will explore the practice of students as partners in SoTL through examples from his research including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research projects. He will present a series of pre-partnership questions (Acai et al., 2017) that are useful for identifying shared objectives, and the value of establishing a Research Learning Plan to support the success of all partners during the project. A model for describing the cycle of partnership with students will be shared (McCollum et al., 2021), along with important first-steps for navigating the known opportunities and challenges of partnership. An Introduction to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (December 6)

ISoTL will host “An introduction to SoTL” workshop as part of the CTLT Winter Institute. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) uses systematic inquiry into student learning with the goal of advancing the practice of teaching by making inquiry findings public (Hutchings, & Shulman, 1999). During this session we will break down the definition of SoTL, explain the value of inquiry for determining the impact of teaching practices on student learning, and how to start the journey of becoming a SoTL practitioner. This workshop will offer attendees a chance to develop a deeper understanding of SoTL and learn how to overcome some of the most common challenges for initiating a SoTL project in their own classrooms.
