Evaluating the Integration of the new Social Entrepreneurial Competency into the Dental Hygiene Degree Program (DHDP) Curriculum

Project Lead: Salima Alibhai, Dental Hygiene (Oral Biological & Medical Sciences)

Project Description

The DHDP has recently completed a curriculum renewal process from which a new Social Entrepreneurship & Leadership (SEL) course was developed and implemented in the 2023W academic year. This new SEL course is a required 4th-year course and is the first of its kind in Canada.  Leadership has been integrated within the DHDP program for many years, but not from the entrepreneurial perspective.
Our proposal is to evaluate the new curriculum by conducting a Readiness for Social Entrepreneurship (RSE) Survey evaluating the students’ confidence levels and attitudes of the social entrepreneurship domain, associated sub-competencies and learning objectives.

Research Questions

1. How confident are graduating dental hygiene students in their ability to demonstrate the sub-competencies in the Social Entrepreneurship Domain?
2. How important do the graduating dental hygiene students view each of the Social Entrepreneurship sub-competencies to their future career as a dental hygienist?
3. What type of things, (e.g. activities/ experiences/ learning approaches) if any, were most helpful and/or less helpful to them in gaining these competencies?
