Improving Dental Students’ Teamwork and Communication Skills through Anonymous Peer Feedback

Principal Investigator: PJ Murphy, Lecturer, Department of Oral Biological Medical Sciences

Project description

This project aims to improve teamwork and communication skills in dental students by using iPeer – an anonymous peer review platform for assessment of classmates’ performance and contributions in group assignments and class presentations. Small group learning and classroom presentations allow students to develop skills that will translate directly to their future roles as dentists, and are excellent opportunities for receiving specific and actionable feedback on these skills. Prior to this project, any such peer feedback was generally provided informally and at the student’s discretion; iPeer identifies specific areas for improvement in teamwork/communication skills. The effectiveness of this project will be measured via multiple student questionnaires and surveys, and using that feedback to improve the project and student outcomes.

Research questions

  • How does peer feedback affect dental students’ performance in team environments and in delivering presentations?
  • Do skills in providing and receiving formative constructive feedback improve with repetition?
