Project Description

This study has two purposes. We want to investigate what motivational factors influence student participation in the Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) program. We also want to examine the factors that affect the students’ satisfaction with the program. The PASS program has been running in Sauder for three years, however, we haven’t done any formal study on the success of this program nor the impact of the program on student learning. As a first step, we intend to understand students’ level of satisfaction with the program and motivational factors so that we can seek incremental improvement to the program.

Impact on teaching and learning at UBC

Outcomes from this research could inform improvements to the existing PASS program. These improvements could motivate more students from COMM 290 and 291 to participate in the PASS program. There is a potential to expand PASS to other courses at the Sauder School of Business, particularly upper year courses. It could help inform the training and performance of our student PASS Leaders, and further enhance the learning experiences of session attendees. Our findings may also help other faculties and schools considering implementation or improvement of their own PASS programs.

Achieved Outcomes

From this project we discovered what motivated students’ attendance, what barriers there were to attending and what influenced their satisfaction.
