Enlist Free ChatGPT to Restore Learning Agency to Students in CHIN465 2026-2027

Project Lead: Xiaowen Xu (Associate Professor of Teaching, Asian Studies)
co-Leads: Bruce Rusk (Associate Professor, Asian Studies) and Clayton Ashton (Lecturer, Asian Studies)

Project Summary

This project aims to enable students to acknowledge, identify, and define the nature of free ChatGPT as a tool in their learning process in CHIN 465 (Fantasy in Chinese Literature), an advanced content-based Chinese language and literature course. By encouraging students to take a comparative approach to reading, analyzing, and evaluating the answers they get from ChatGPT, students are expected to strengthen their own critical skills of reading, analyzing, and interpreting a literary text. Ultimately, students will take the learning agency into their own hand.

Research Questions

  1. What difference does ChatGPT make to students’ close reading of a literary work?
  2. What kind of learning activities can enable students to know that ChatGPT is not an authority that replaces them, but a tool that is pending on their review, in their learning process?
  3. What benefits can students get from the traps set up by ChatGPT hallucinations?
